At Pure Africa

Waste

Pure Africa operates a full wastewater septic tank treatment plant with a capacity of up to 5000 liters of water an hour, making us the only company to effectively empty the boats of waste water. We operate grease traps and waste separation for recycling – which we tie into our partnership with Greenline Africa. This ensures that no waste goes into the river, something that is essential to its preservation.

Power

We have fitted extensive solar panels on our flagship Zambezi Explorer that power all onboard facilities.

Food

As strong believers in supporting local, we source the majority of our ingredients from within the Zambezi Valley and work actively towards reducing our food waste.

Community

We believe in supporting community initiatives – from food growers and artisans to uplifting and training members of our staff.

Key Initiatives

1. Greenline Africa

https://www.greenlineafrica.org/greenlineafrica/
About
Greenline Africa is a local community based organization working with youth, women and children in and around Victoria Falls and Livingstone. Their vision is to create a better life for marginalized communities in Africa. Greenline Africa projects include building schools and playgrounds, developing vegetable gardens, water and sanitation, recycling and Gogo (grandmother) and orphan support. Greenline Africa also focusses on biodiversity and human-wildlife conflict, doing ongoing work in both spheres.
Our Impact
Pure Africa is deeply committed to playing an active role in supporting Greenline Africa, one that goes beyond our monthly monetary contributions. We purchase vegetables and fruits grown by local farmers who are part of the Greenline Africa program that teaches, provides start-up finance and creates a market for their produce. In addition, we manufactured all the new furniture items on the luxury deck of the Zambezi Explorer in conjunction with a women workshop project lead by Greenline Africa. In this recent collaboration Pure Africa did the designs while Greenline Africa handled the production.

2. Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, VFAPU

https://vfapu.com/
About
The Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of local wildlife and natural resources, while addressing the heavy burden of human and animal conflict. VFAPU works to ease this risk by protecting the wildlife and habitat from poacher pressure (subsistence and commercial), as well rescuing and rehabilitating animals injured by human interference. They train and find employment for ex-poachers so that they may have an alternate sustainable income. Their ongoing community awareness programs reach children at an early age in a bid to create long term solutions.
Our Impact
For the past 5 years, Pure Africa has been supporting the incredible work done by VFAPU by doing what we do best – or at least one of our fortes – organising and hosting a successful special event annual fundraiser.

Pure Africa Team

With a female strong management team headed up by MD and Owner Elisabeth Curiger, empowerment, parity and inclusion are embodied by Pure Africa. We pride ourselves in the upliftment, training and equal opportunities awarded our team and how it has led to a core group of strong women steering the company to increased success.

Elisabeth Curiger

Managing Director and Owner
Elisabeth, originally from Switzerland, has been travelling to Africa for several decades and knows this continent and its beautiful destinations inside out. Her deep passion for travel is no surprise: she started exploring the world as a flight attendant at SwissAir in the early 1980s. After 20 years in the recycling and construction industry, she went back to travel and founded her own tour company, Curiger Travel Switzerland. Since 2013 she has been putting her expertise and all her heart into Pure Africa, first as the Creative Director and since 2019 as the Managing Director. Elisabeth also holds a Master in Feng Shui, which she acquired in Malaysia.

Memory Kaigawile

Reservations
Proudly Zimbabwean, Memory has always had a passion for tourism. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management from the University of Zimbabwe and already started selling holiday packages to other students during that time. She has over seven years of experience in the industry and has worked for some of the most renowned operators in Africa. Memory soon realized that she enjoys Sales & Reservations the most, even winning several awards for her excellence. In her spare time, she is also a zumba and aerobics trainer.

Bernadette Veldsman

Weddings & Events
Bernadette or Bernie is our ultimate wedding planner. She loves that her work demands innovation, passion, energy and a dedicated understanding of detail and logistics. These reasons alone are what make Pure Africa leaders in this field and true innovators to weddings and events in Victoria Falls. Bernie has been in the wedding and tourism industry for 14 years, having organized ‘special days’ in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. She is outgoing with a passion for great food and wine, loves exploring new ideas and going the extra mile.

Elena Miti

Sales
Elena is passionate about travelling, animals and helping the less fortunate. She holds a degree in Commerce from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town and gained her first work experience in the finance sector. Elena joined Pure Africa in 2013 as Office Manager & Accountant and has been the Sales Manager since last year. She strives to leave the world a better place – once a Miss Earth finalist this enabled her to participate in projects to preserve the environment.
